Usage and Dilution of Essential Oils in Beauty Products

Bookmark and Share

Scents in products or the absence of scents is based on many factors. Some people prefer a certain type of scent while others prefer little or none.  Scent can also go hand-in- hand on how the manufacturer of a line conveys their products message to the consumer.

With all this to consider, essential oils in your own product can seem like an overwhelming task to consider.  How much do I use? Are they considered safe to use? How do I properly measure an oil? Why does the scent change over time?

Things to consider when formulating:

Dilution – in general, essential oils should always be diluted into a carrier such as an oil or cream.

Phototoxic or photosensitivity – refers to essential oils applied to the skin and then exposed to the sun can cause a reaction on the skin.

Usage Rate of Essential Oils – vary with the intensity of scent. Usually, less is more (you can also refer to this past blog post about the standard dilution rate of essential oils).

How to measure – this is determined by drops or by fluid measurement.

Prices – Last but not least, essential oils vary widely through different companies.
