Soap Wort :: Herbal Hair & Body Wash

Bookmark and Share

Even though I formulate and make professional shampoos, liquid soap and body wash, I love to use totally pure concoctions every now and then. Here is a simple and pure recipe for an herbal hair and body wash. Try it as a pet wash. It does not have any suds.

Soapwort
The plant, the leaves and the root of soapwort naturally cleans. The plant contains saponins which are in soap. The word, soap, comes from the Latin word sapo and means soap.

Soapwort Herbal Hair and Body Wash
Makes about 4 ounces

3 cups boiling distilled water

2 tablespoons soapwort root, Saponaria officinalis

2 tablespoons dried herbs for hair care (horsetail, lemon verbena, nettles, peppermint and/or rosemary)

1/2 teaspoon vegetable glycerin (optional)

Directions To Make
1. In a medium size pot, boil water and add soapwort and herbs to water, turn heat down and simmer for 15 minutes.
2. Remove pot from heat and cool.
3. Strain herbs out of water with an unbleached coffee filter, muslin cloth or fine mesh strainer.
4. Stir in glycerin.
4. Bottle and Label with Date.
5. Use within one week.

Directions For Use
Apply soapwort infusion liberally to wet hair and/or body. Rinse. It will leave the hair and skin feeling soft.

Shelf Life
Use within one week.

I want to try this for my dog, he has itchy skin, so I'd like to make it with some soothing herbs. Where can you get soap wort? Is it something that can be found at a health food store or whole foods, or order it?
